Will there be peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo?

The Democratic Republic of Congo – DRC- has written to the Security Council, providing what it terms fresh evidence of Rwanda’s involvement in the recent fighting in the eastern city of Goma.

The DRC government has submitted that military material intended for the Rwandan contingent serving as part of the UN/AU hybrid operation in Darfur –UNAMID was found in amilitary arena in the DRC.

Documents obtained by ZNBC at the UN in New York, show that materials such as arms, communication equipment, rocket carriers and military medical documents for the Rwandan Defence Forces were found at Rumangabo.

A letter by the DRC to the Security Council has urged the Council to condemn what it callsa renewed act of aggression by Rwanda.

Last week, renegade general Laurent Nkunda’s rebels said they had captured an army base at the border village of Ramangabo near Goma after a day of intense fighting with government forces.

But the DRC Government has accused Rwanda of backing general Nkunda’s forces in the fighting that broke out at Rumangabo, North Kivu last Tuesday.

Rwanda has denied theallegations.

Rwanda twice invaded its neighbour in the 1990s and has accused the DRC government of backing Rwandan rebels.

Some of the rebels are accusedof carrying out the 1994 genocide of Tutsis and moderate Hutus in Rwanda.

The Security Council is expected to meet later this week to adopt a presidential statement on the recently renewed hostilities in eastern parts of the DRC.
