The Dag Hammarskjöld Fund for Journalists

Last Thursday 23th, in one of the rooms of the fourth floor of the United Nations headquarters in New York, was held the 47 ° annual luncheon organized by the Dag Hammarskjöld Fund in honor of the four journalists that since September 9 are doing a fellowship at the UN. Among the guests was the secretary general of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, ambassadors, UN officials, heads of NGOs, journalists and Timothy Wirth, president of the UN Foundation.

Erick Kabendera of the Tanzanian newspaper The Citizen, Grevazio Zulu of Zambia National Broadcasting, Ebtihal Mubaraks of the newpaper Arab News of Saudi Arabia and Patricia Caycho, of Caretas, gave a speech to the guests, in which they highlighted the problems in their regions.

Kabendera and Zulu spoke about the need to continue the support to health programs and education in Africa, while Mubarak spoke about the abuses committed agains women in Saudi Arabia. The journalist of Caretas spoke about the urgency for the international community to support Latin America in its efforts to combat poverty and climate change. "What quality of life we are going to give to the people we rescued from poverty if climate change is going to devastate the planet. As a society, as world, as people concerned in the survival of our species, what are we doing to stop this? What the United Nations can do?" she said.

The correspondent Edie Lederer of the Associated Press, who was chief of the AP bureau in Peru during the seventies and faced the expulsion from the country ordered by General Juan Velasco Alvarado, presented the journalist of Caretas.

El pasado jueves 23, en uno de los salones del cuarto piso de la sede de las Naciones Unidas en Nueva York, se celebró el 47° almuerzo anual organizado por la fundación Dag Hammarskjöld en honor a los cuatro periodistas becados por esta institución que desde el 9 de setiembre se encuentran cubriendo la Asamblea General de la ONU.

Entre los invitados estaba el secretario general de las Naciones Unidas, Ban Ki-moon, embajadores, funcionarios de la ONU, directores de ONGs, periodistas y Timothy Wirth, presidente de la Fundación de la ONU.

Erick Kabendera del diario The Citizen de Tanzania, Grevazio Zulu del Zambia National Broadcasting, Ebtihal Mubarak del diario Arab News de Arabia Saudita y Patricia Caycho, de CARETAS, dieron un discurso ante los invitados, donde resaltaron la problemática existente en sus regiones.

Kabendera y Zulu resaltaron la necesidad de seguir apoyando los programas de salud y alfabetismo en África, mientras que Mubarak expuso sobre los abusos a que las mujeres son sometidas en Arabia Saudita. Mientras que la periodista de Caretas habló sobre la urgencia de que la comunidad internacional apoye a Latinoamérica en sus esfuerzos por luchar contra la pobreza y el cambio climático. “Qué calidad de vida les vamos a dar a las personas que rescatamos de la pobreza si el cambio climático va a devastar el planeta. Como sociedad, como mundo, como personas preocupadas en la supervivencia de nuestra especie, ¿qué estamos haciendo para parar esto? ¿Qué podrán hacer las Naciones Unidas?”, dijo.
