2006 Recipient: Ambassador Jan Eliasson

The Dag Hammarskjöld Fund for Journalists presented the first Dag Hammarskjöld Inspiration Award to Jan Eliasson for his lifetime effort to promote peace, dialogue and reconciliation through diplomacy. Ambassador Eliasson is a worthy successor to his compatriot. Just as Dag Hammarskjöld inspired him to become a diplomat, he has inspired young people from Sweden and many other countries to dedicate their lives to helping humanity and promoting a more peaceful world.

Mr. Eliasson was elected President of the 60th session of the United Nations General Assembly on 13 June 2005. At the time, he was Sweden’s Ambassador to the United States, a post he held from September 2000 until July 2005. Ambassador Eliasson previously served as Foreign Minister of Sweden and was the Secretary General's Special Envoy to Darfur.
